🥁 The tip to try if your puppy cries in their crate…

Settle them BEFORE they spiral into overtired chaos. Don’t push the time between naps as long as you possibly can - catch them before they start biting more, zooming around, etc. A regulated puppy settles easier!

A puppy who loves their crate usually wasn’t just “perfect”, “naturally good”. In general, crates are something that have to be taught. Puppies who get it have learned that
🌸 calm happens there
🌸 naps happen there
🌸 food happens there
🌸 safety happens there

Done properly it can become one of the BEST tools for many goals - potty training, building independence, and more.

A lot of crate struggles come from

-overtired puppies
-going too fast
-only using the crate when owners leave (not a great association for them!)
-expecting independence before confidence (read that again 🙏🏼)

🔑 The goal with crate training is a puppy who feels calm and secure being alone.

Part 2 of Preparing for Baby! 🍼🧡 In Part 1 we talked about that ever so important and helpful “Leave it”, where your dog learns to give space to whatever you’re wanting them to (in this case, your baby!).
2️⃣👉🏼 In Part 2 we focus on “Place” - another amazing tool to have in your belt where you teach your dog to go right to their designated “place”. This really helps to create a calm space, and gives your dog clear instructions on what you want them to do. With “Place”, your dog learns to settle much quicker than if left to their own, and it allows you to choose where you want them to be as well.

Sometimes we unknowingly make biting worse. Here are things NOT to do when your puppy is biting ❌

-waving hands around
-roughhousing when your puppy is tired and overstimulated
-pushing them away repeatedly (this one is hard not to do)
-waiting too long for naps

Here’s what happens in a puppies brain when you do these things:

🧠 Their natural chase and play instincts are activated, making them want to natural grab at you.
🧠 Rough play pushes their nervous system even higher. All their good behaviours up to that point are harder for them to do.
🧠 Even negative attention can feel engaging and rewarding. Pushing them away can reinforce the biting cycle.
🧠 Overtired puppies (like toddlers) struggle with regulation and self-control. Overtired = more biting.

Puppy biting? Here’s a tip for you 👉🏼 after redirecting that behaviour to their toy, reward them the SECOND they choose that toy. Say something like “yes!” or “good puppy!”. They’re choosing the toy over your hand, which is a reason to celebrate! 😆🎉 Make sure they know it!

If your puppy is being “bad”… ask yourself this first:

“What is their behaviour trying to tell me?” 👀 Because most puppy behaviours aren’t random. Biting? They’re probably overtired and in need of more structured naps.
Ignoring cues outside? The environment may be too hard right now. Practice on training that focus and attention to you first, and then introduce new environments. If you’ve done this, keep on reinforcing those basics regularly.
Pulling on leash? They may genuinely not understand what you’re asking yet. 😵‍💫

Bottom line is this: Your puppy isn’t trying to give you a hard time. They’re actually having a hard time!

A lot of puppy owners in Calgary & Airdrie think they need to “correct” more - when often the answer is:
✔️ more sleep
✔️ slower progression
✔️ clearer communication

Your pups behaviour IS communication. Once you start seeing it that way, training changes completely. 💛
